Following the Supreme court's ruling in favor of Gov. Abdullahi Sule, loyalists of an aggrieved party took to the streets to protest in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital. The Supreme court had earlier confirmed Abdullahi Sule's election in the ruling that favored the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Blocking the Lafia-Jos Road, supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) set tires ablaze in front of the party's state secretariat, creating a barricade. The protest compelled motorists in Lafia to seek alternative routes.
Security forces are present to restore calm and prevent any escalation. Meanwhile, businesses, schools, and shops in the Lafia metropolis hastily closed as a result of the protest.
Earlier today, the Supreme Court upheld the Court of Appeal's judgment that had nullified the annulment of Governor Sule's election. In a unanimous decision by a five-member panel, the apex court affirmed Sule of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the rightful winner of the governorship election held on March 18, 2023, in the state.
Nasarawa state was among the six states that received the Supreme court's verdict today and it is reportedly the only state that faced violent criticism and opposition. The states that had court rulings are Ogun, Delta, Kaduna, Kebbi, Gombe, and Nasarawa state.
