Associate professor at the Department of Epidemiology and Community Health, College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, Dr. Hafsat Abolore Ameen has encouraged Nigerians to develop the practice of knowing their health status to avert unexpected death.
Ameen, who conducted a health presentation as part of the Ilorin Emirate Staff Association's annual Ramadan lecture at the University of Ilorin, highlighted that the majority of unexpected fatalities reported are not truly sudden.
She said “This occurred due to ignorance or outright negligence of symptoms of terminal illnesses by careless individuals”
She explained that it is critical for patients to get frequent health check-ups to determine their blood pressure, blood sugar level, lipid profile, and Body Mass Index (BMI), among other factors.
Ameen, who is also a Consultant Epidemiologist at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), emphasised that no circumstance should preclude adults from being responsible and attentive to their health requirements.
While urging individuals to live in healthy and sanitary conditions, Ameen also urged the Federal Government, through its relevant authorities, to ensure that pharmaceuticals and foods taken in public places are of high quality and not substandard.
