The management of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI) has expelled two students for their involvement in a violent assault on a female student, captured in a viral video.
The video circulated widely on social media platforms, captured the disturbing scene of Miss Opemiposi Precious Bolaji, an 18-year-old 100L Mass Communication student, physically assaulting her colleague, identified as Miss Gloria Ajayi, also a 100L Mass Communication student, in a private hostel outside the University campus.
In a statement issued by the institution's Public Relations Officer, Temitope Akinbisoye on Tuesday, it was revealed that the students implicated in the video were summoned for interrogation and appropriate action was taken by the university's policies and regulations.
Akinbisoye stated, "In accordance with our institution’s policies and extant regulations, the students who were captured in the viral video appeared before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee at its emergency meeting held on Monday, May 6, 2024, for interrogations and appropriate recommendations, the report of which has been submitted to the University authorities."
The university strongly condemned the incident, emphasizing that such behavior is inconsistent with the values and standards of respect and dignity upheld by the institution.
Regarding the disciplinary measures, Akinbisoye outlined the outcomes for each student involved. Miss Opemiposi Precious Bolaji, the assailant, was expelled from the university for her misconduct, while Miss Genesis Osaro, an accomplice who provided the stick used in the assault, faced a similar consequence.
However, Miss Gloria Ajayi, the victim, was exonerated as she did not retaliate or engage in violence during the incident. Additionally, two students who recorded and shared the video on social media were warned and advised to report such incidents to the appropriate authorities rather than escalating them online.
Furthermore, Mr Olawale Ajewole, a student who attempted to prevent further harm to Miss Gloria Ajayi, was exonerated from any wrongdoing.
The university emphasized its commitment to promoting a safe and respectful environment for all students and encouraged anyone who witnesses or experiences harassment, abuse, or violence to report it immediately.
"Moving forward, we will continue to prioritize the well-being and safety of our University community. We will also reinforce our efforts to educate and promote respectful and responsible behaviour among our students," Akinbisoye concluded.
