The Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja has declared that same-sex marriage is a criminal offence punishable under the law.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi made this declaration while describing the act as illegal and prohibited under Sections 214 to 217 of the Criminal Code. The Police headquarters has however issued orders for the arrest of individuals found engaged in unlawful acts within the country.
ACP Adejobi had emphasized that same-sex marriage is strictly prohibited in Nigeria according to the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014. This legislation criminalizes the solemnization, operation, and public display of same-sex marriages.
He addressed the recent trend on social media of certain individuals identifying as queer, stating that such people are encouraging and associating themselves with activities perceived as unnatural under Nigerian laws.
The Nigeria Police Force therefore aims to enlighten the public on the legal aspects related to unnatural offences and same-sex marriage.
The police spokesman noted that the Sections 214 to 217 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act are applicable in the Southern states. These sections specifically prohibit the acts, such as having carnal knowledge of a person against the order of nature or with an animal.
Those found guilty may face legal consequences as outlined by the law while the Section 284 of the Nigerian Penal Code, applicable in the Northern part of the country.
