Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to visit Washington on Monday to talk about "putting an end to the killing and the war" with US President Donald Trump, as he announced on Saturday.
Zelensky made the statement after a phone conversation with Trump, who shared the "main points" of his discussions with Russia’s Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
"On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to go over the specifics of ending the killing and the war," Zelensky stated. "I appreciate the invitation."
The meeting in Washington will occur three days after Trump’s discussions with Putin in Alaska, which resulted in no ceasefire declaration or significant progress to resolve Russia’s ongoing invasion lasting over three years.
The day following the US-Russia summit, Zelensky urged Kyiv’s European partners to participate at "every stage" of negotiations.
He also emphasized his readiness for a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin — a proposal that Ukraine has been advocating for, but the Kremlin has opposed.
"Ukraine asserts that important issues can be addressed at the leadership level, and a trilateral format is appropriate for this," said Zelensky.
