The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a decisive victory in the supplementary election for the Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency of Kano State, reinforcing the party’s political foothold in the region.
The Returning Officer, Professor Muhammad Waziri of Bayero University, announced the official results on Sunday. According to him, the APC candidate, Garba Gwarmai, polled a total of 31,472 votes to defeat his closest rival, Yusuf Maigado of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who garnered 27,931 votes.
The supplementary election was conducted following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to declare the initial March 18 state assembly election in the constituency inconclusive due to irregularities and disruptions in some polling units.
Speaking shortly after his declaration as winner, Gwarmai expressed appreciation to the people of Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency for their support and reaffirmed his commitment to delivering quality representation. He noted that the victory signals renewed hope and trust in the leadership and policies of the APC both at the state and national levels.
“This mandate is a clear indication that our people desire progressive governance and development,” he said. “I promise to work tirelessly to justify the confidence reposed in me and ensure that our constituency receives the dividends of democracy.”
The victory, secured with a margin of 3,541 votes, is viewed by political analysts as a major boost for the APC in Kano State, a strategic political stronghold in northern Nigeria. Party supporters celebrated across the constituency with processions and solidarity chants, hailing the outcome as a reaffirmation of the APC’s popularity and grassroots acceptance.
Reacting to the result, the Kano State APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, described the development as a “well-deserved win” and praised INEC for conducting what he termed a free, fair, and transparent election. He further appealed to members of the opposition to join hands with the APC in advancing the interests of the people.
On the other hand, the NNPP candidate, Yusuf Maigado, thanked his supporters and called for calm.
He stated that while the result was not what his party had hoped for, they remained committed to ensuring credible leadership and democratic values in Kano State.
The supplementary election witnessed impressive voter turnout, with security operatives and polling officials maintaining order across the affected polling units.
Observers from civil society organisations commended the conduct of the poll, describing it as peaceful and largely in compliance with electoral guidelines.
Political stakeholders say Gwarmai’s win solidifies the APC’s efforts to strengthen its presence in Kano State ahead of future elections and consolidates its support base in the North.
