Two students from Niger Delta University have been tragically confirmed dead, with several others injured, following a serious auto accident in Bayelsa State that has left the academic community and families in grief.
The collision occurred between a truck and a commercial tricycle on the Yenagoa–Amassoma Road. Local residents blamed the crash on a lack of road signage and excessive speeding by drivers, particularly noting that it happened at a curve in the road.
Witness Godspower Okilo recounted that the tricycle had no escape route as the truck was already too close when the danger became evident. He emphasized that reckless driving by truck drivers on this road had been an ongoing concern, with community complaints falling on deaf ears.
"The impact was devastating, leaving the tricycle mangled beyond recognition. Good Samaritans hurried to assist, pulling survivors from the debris and transporting the injured to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa.
The deceased were subsequently taken to a nearby morgue," Okilo reported.
He added, "This incident has reignited demands for stricter traffic enforcement; the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the State Police Command need to ramp up patrols, implement speed bumps, and carry out regular inspections on heavy vehicles."
Confirming the incident that occurred on Thursday, Musa Muhammad, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, stated that a thorough investigation is in progress to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
Musa assured the public that the investigation's findings would lead to effective measures aimed at preventing similar occurrences and improving road safety in the region.
