The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Nasarawa State Council, has called off its planned strike following intervention from the state government.
The association, demanding improved working conditions for its members, issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government on March 12, 2024.
In a letter signed by the Chairman, Attah Ayaka Avre, and the Secretary, Alaku Ayuba, NANNM announced the suspension after a State Executive Council (SEC) emergency meeting on Tuesday.
"The ultimatum has been put on hold while we observe the implementation of the hazard allowance to take effect in April 2024," the letter reads.
The association commended Governor Abdullahi Sule's efforts to maintain peace in the health sector and expressed appreciation for separate meetings with Health Commissioner Dr. Gaza Gwamna and Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe.
NANNM highlighted the government's commitment to implementing a hazard allowance in April 2024, a promise made by the Deputy Governor during a health sector union meeting on March 27th.
The association urged Governor Sule to formalize the government's position and commitment in writing. They also requested continued discussions on implementing their other demands.
"As a peace-loving, understanding and noble association cum trade union, we remain resolute and committed to maintaining a harmonious industrial relationship with the Government for an effective and efficient healthcare service delivery to the citizens of Nasarawa State and beyond,"said NANNM
