The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Abuja chapter, protested over the Nigeria and Midwifery Council of Nigeria's revised verification certification requirements on Monday.

The outraged nurses said it was an attempt to limit their ability to seek career possibilities, demanding the NMCN address nurses' welfare, wage scale, staff scarcity, and other issues.

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Abuja chapter,

According to reports, the NMCN released a circular on February 7 2024, amending the guidelines for requesting credential verification for nurses and midwives.

Dr. Faruk Abubakar, the Registrar of the council, signed the circular which partly read,

Foreign boards of nursing shall require a non-refundable fee per application for verification

This shall cover the cost of courier services to the applicant’s institution(s) of training, place of work, and foreign board.

“Eligible applicants must have a minimum of two years post qualification experience from the date of issuance of the permanent practicing license.

NMCN promised to reject applications with a provisional license outrightly.

“The council shall request a letter of good standing from the chief executive officer of the applicant’s place(s) of work, and the last nursing training institution attended.

The Registrar/CEO of NMCN should be directly addressed with responses to the following.

Please note that the council shall not accept such letter(s) through the applicant.”

The council also specified that applicants must have active practicing licenses with at least six months until they expire and that verification applications will take at least six months to process.

It said that the adoption of the recommendations will take effect from March 1, 2024.
