Elon Musk's social media platform, X, is launching its crowd-sourced fact-checking program, Community Notes, in India just weeks before the nation's crucial elections.
This move signifies the first opportunity for Indian users to directly contribute context and debunk potential misinformation surrounding popular posts. Contributors can expect their notes to be evaluated by other users based on factors like accuracy and helpfulness.
While the ability to view Community Notes globally was introduced in December 2022, posting was initially restricted to a select few countries. X has been gradually expanding the program, and with this latest rollout, contributors from a total of 69 nations can now participate.
The addition of India comes as many social media platforms are ramping up efforts to combat election-related misinformation. However, X has remained silent regarding any specific initiatives it may have planned for the upcoming Indian elections.
Despite its potential for fact-checking, Community Notes has faced challenges in curbing misinformation even with contributors adding context. The program's effectiveness in India's complex, multilingual political environment remains to be seen.
This rollout coincides with X's recent reversal of a previous ban on political advertising, a move implemented by the platform's prior leadership.
It's important to note X, formerly known as Twitter, has had a tumultuous relationship with the Indian government. Earlier this year, the platform complied with authorities' requests to withhold certain accounts and posts related to farmer protests. X maintains that it is challenging these blocking orders through the court system.
In 2023, Elon Musk himself acknowledged the strictness of India's social media regulations, stating that X must "abide by the laws of the country."
