The United Nations Children’s Fund aims to vaccinate 90 percent of Nigerian girls aged nine to 14 against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection by December 2024.
The second phase of the HPV vaccination for teenage girls will begin in the South-West states of Ekiti, Ondo, Oyo, and Edo on May 27.
UNICEF emphasized the importance of the HPV vaccine in preventing cervical cancer and addressed misinformation and myths surrounding the vaccination.
A UNICEF health specialist, Dr. Ijeoma Agbo, highlighted the need for improved access to vaccination services and called on parents to ensure their teenage girls receive the vaccine.
The first phase of vaccination achieved over 50 percent success rate in some states, but there is still work to be done, particularly in the SouthWest region.
The remaining three Southwest states and Edo will be included in the vaccination program to improve coverage.
