The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, commended President Bola Tinubu and his administration for their efforts in stabilizing Nigeria’s economy.
In an interview with the media following her visit to the president on Thursday, Okonjo-Iweala stated, “President Bola Tinubu and his team have made significant strides in stabilizing Nigeria’s economy, which is essential for any economic improvement.”
She emphasized that Tinubu deserves recognition for the economic stability achieved and noted that the reforms have been heading in the right direction. The next step, according to her, is to focus on growth.
“Now is the time for Nigeria to advance its economy and establish social safety nets to support those affected by the reforms," she continued.
"It’s important to find ways to help Nigerians manage the challenges they face and also grow the economy to create more jobs and increase income levels.” These were among the topics discussed with the President.
Upon taking office on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu announced the end of federal subsidies on fuel, a move that resulted in a spike in fuel prices, reaching up to N1,200 per litre, which in turn led to a substantial increase in food prices, causing widespread financial strain for ordinary Nigerians.
