LAGOS STATE, Nigeria —The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the role of technical and vocational skills in tackling unemployment and driving economic growth cannot be overemphasized.
He spoke at the 2024 graduation ceremony of the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board, held in Agidingbi, Ikeja.
At the ceremony, about 2,500 students graduated in various disciplines, including engineering, ICT, and creative arts.
Sanwo-Olu affirmed that vocational training ramins critical injury preparing the youth for a dynamic job market.
According to him, “The significance of technical and vocational education cannot be overstated. Institutions like LASTVEB equip young people with practical, industry-relevant skills that meet the demands of an evolving economy.
“Beyond these individual accomplishments, technical and vocational education drives community development, reduces unemployment, and ensures our graduates are competitive globally. For instance, technical education has been shown to increase graduation rates, improve employability, and foster entrepreneurship.
“Many of our graduates today will step into the world as job creators, while others will fill critical roles in high-demand industries, bolstering Lagos State’s economic standing both nationally and internationally,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment through the Education and Technology pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S.+ agenda.
“By investing in the skills and capabilities of our youths, we are building the foundation for a prosperous, inclusive and self-reliant society,” the governor added.
Sanwo-Olu commended the collaboration between the government, industries, and educational institutions, which has ensured that vocational training aligns with global industry standards.
He appealed to graduates to leverage their skills for meaning growth and transformation of the nation.
“Your skills are powerful tools—not only for personal success but for societal transformation,” he told the graduates.
