The spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga, has accused Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and member of the Labour Party, of being dishonest and failing to uphold his commitments.
In a post on X on Sunday, Onanuga reacted to Obi’s claim that he would only serve one term if he became president in 2027.
He recalled how Obi abandoned his previous party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), despite promising not to do so.
Onanuga stated, "You mention keeping your promises and that your vow should be your bond, yet we both know that isn’t the case.
You have a history of breaking promises and often lie without reason. For instance, you proclaimed you wouldn’t leave APGA, yet you did (the justification for your departure does not matter; if we were to excuse it, you would certainly have a reason to break your one-term promise).
You speak of trust, but how can people trust someone who cannot adhere to a simple promise of not leaving a political party?"
He further remarked that Obi’s comments suggested he had never held an elected position before, pointing out that Obi ran for re-election as Anambra State governor in 2010, narrowly winning due to a split opposition. "Why didn’t you choose to step down after just one term in office?"
Onanuga asked. He dismissed Obi’s commitment to transforming Nigeria from a consumer nation into a productive one and questioned, "After serving two terms, did Anambra appear to be a state that has undergone transformation?"
He added, "If you couldn’t revitalize a small state like Anambra after eight years, what assurance do we have that you could achieve anything substantial within four years as president of a complex Nigeria?"
In response to Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s remark that any politician promising to serve only one term should seek psychological evaluation, Obi reaffirmed his vow to only serve one term if elected president in 2027.
