RIVERS, Nigeria - The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd), has requested essential legislative support to enable his administration to implement its outlined programs for the benefit of the citizens.
He mentioned that these programs aim to ensure consistent socio-economic activities and the development of crucial infrastructure that will promote societal and economic advancement, enhance productivity, improve access to essential services, and ultimately provide a high quality of life for the populace.
Ibas made this request during a courtesy visit to Government House, Port Harcourt, by the Senate Committee on Works, headed by its Chairman, Senator Barinada Mpigi.
The Senate Committee on Works was joined by a delegation from Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, led by Managing Director Dr. Peer Lubasch.
The administrator underscored that his administration continues to tackle issues of insecurity and critical infrastructural challenges to foster development.
He stated, “We are currently preparing a new budget that aligns with our dedication to healthcare, education, social services, alongside ongoing infrastructural development in our state. We have worked hard to ensure that this process is transparent, inclusive, and, most importantly, efficient.
“The forthcoming budget, which is close to completion, emphasizes the creation of job opportunities and investment in essential sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and technology.
As we advance with these initiatives, we require your ongoing support to secure the necessary resources and legislative endorsement to realize them. Your partnership is vital to our success in ensuring that Rivers State continues on the trajectory of progress and lasting peace for future generations.”
He advised the delegation that as they conduct oversight duties to evaluate vital infrastructure in the state, it is essential for them to consider Rivers State’s significant position within the country.
He remarked: “Rivers State, known as the treasure base of the nation and a major economic center, houses crucial infrastructure, including roads, bridges, seaports, airports, oil and gas facilities, a petrochemical plant, refineries, and other pivotal establishments. However, like many states in the country, we face challenges related to the maintenance and expansion of this infrastructure due to various limitations, including resource constraints.” Ibas sought their collaboration in obtaining the necessary federal support for infrastructural projects within the state.
He said, “You have identified many of the currently ongoing projects. These encompass both financial support and the facilitation of swift execution of federal initiatives that will enhance our state’s growth. Your persistent advocacy within the National Assembly will be crucial in ensuring that Rivers State receives the focus and resources required to thrive.”
Since taking office on March 20, 2025, Ibas explained that he has prioritized restoring peace and stability in Rivers State. His efforts have thus far concentrated on establishing a conducive environment for investment, development, and prosperity.
“We have engaged in fruitful discussions with key stakeholders, including civil society organizations, traditional leaders, local council heads, government officials, and civil servants to rebuild the trust and stability required for sustainable progress. I am confident that with your support and ongoing collaboration, we can transform Rivers State into a benchmark of peace, prosperity, and development. Together, we can surmount the challenges we encounter and forge a promising future for all our citizens.”
In his remarks, Mpigi noted that they were in the state to monitor some ongoing federal projects, such as the Bodo-Bonny link road and bridge, and the coastal road project, which is 40 percent complete and will ultimately benefit the state.
