A scientist located in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Anietie Ikott, has cautioned that Nigeria might soon face a catastrophic earthquake along with other disasters related to climate change.
Speaking in Uyo, he criticized the notion that Nigeria is outside the seismic zone, asserting that the nation is not immune to earthquakes.
The Chief Executive Director of Anirich Nig. Limited pointed out that the recent tremors in Abuja and parts of the South-West are evidence of Nigeria's vulnerability to seismic activity.
He stated, “We have seen numerous climate change-related disasters in Nigeria, including severe winds that cause extensive damage, heavy rainfall resulting in floods that have claimed thousands of lives and properties, and the destruction of multi-million naira infrastructures, as witnessed in Niger and Borno states recently.
"An earthquake is imminent in Nigeria, and it will be quite destructive. We are not exempt from earthquakes; they can occur at any moment.”
He added, “Any area in Nigeria that is hit by an earthquake will never be the same.” “Recently, we experienced an earthquake tremor in Abuja and parts of the Western State.
This clearly demonstrates that we are vulnerable to earthquakes.”
Ikott further mentioned that such disasters could be averted utilizing a technology he has developed, stating, “Earthquakes, excessive rainfall, and flooding are manageable; phenomena such as tornadoes, cyclones, hurricanes, extreme winter ice accumulation, ice storms, and severe thunderstorms can all be controlled through weather control technology.”
