The Federal Government of Nigeria to launch an identity solution embedded with payment functionalities, facilitated by AfriGO, a National domestic card scheme.

This initiative, led by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), aims to revolutionize access to social and financial services.

The new National ID card will be equipped with verifiable National Identity features, in accordance with the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, which mandates the enrollment and issuance of a General Multipurpose card (GMPC) to Nigerians and legal residents.

This multifaceted card serves as a tangible means for individuals to authenticate their identity, access government and private services, and foster financial inclusion.

Eligibility for the National ID card is contingent upon registration with the National Identification Number (NIN).

Compliant with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, the card is positioned as the country's primary national identity card, offering a host of functionalities beyond mere identification.

In addition to serving as proof of identity, the card can function as a debit or prepaid card, linked to individuals' bank accounts.

This dual-purpose feature enables financially marginalized Nigerians to access various government intervention programs and financial services, furthering the government's agenda of inclusive growth.

NIMC underscores its commitment to safeguarding cardholders' personal data, adhering to stringent data protection regulations and international security standards.

Notable features include machine-readable zones, biometric authentication, offline capability, and the inclusion of Nigeria's quick response code (NQR), integrating various essential services such as travel, health insurance, micro-loans, and subsidies.

Requests for the National ID card can be made online, at commercial banks, participating agencies, or any NIMC office nationwide, promising widespread accessibility and convenience for citizens and legal residents alike.
