President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sadness over the fatalities and destruction caused by the recent flooding in Yola, Adamawa State, and a boat accident in Guni village, Niger State.
In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President offered his condolences to the families affected and praised the emergency responders involved in rescue efforts.
“I share my heartfelt sympathies with the communities and families of those impacted by the flood disaster in Yola and the tragic boat incident in Niger State,” the President was reported as saying.
He characterized flooding as “a global phenomenon largely influenced by climate change,” but cautioned that local human activities frequently exacerbate its effects.
“We must avoid actions that intensify the ramifications of natural disasters,” he stated.
Tinubu commended the bravery and dedication of emergency responders, local divers, volunteers, and community leaders who have been tirelessly working in both states.
“Their courage and selflessness amidst challenges inspire hope and reflect the strength of our collective humanity,” he remarked.
Despite ongoing initiatives by government agencies to raise public awareness, the President voiced concern regarding the ongoing occurrences of such disasters.
“It is troubling that these events continue despite ongoing awareness campaigns by the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, and the National Inland Waterways Authority,” Tinubu observed.
He called upon traditional rulers, religious leaders, and local authorities to enhance community advocacy for promoting safety practices, especially concerning waterways.
“I urge opinion leaders and relevant authorities to persist in their safety advocacy. Our people must recognize that these tragedies are preventable,” he stressed.
To offer immediate assistance to the victims, Tinubu has instructed prompt action from relevant federal agencies.
“I have directed the National Emergency Response Centre and NEMA to work together with the governments of Adamawa and Niger States on a comprehensive rescue and relief initiative,” he said.
The President also appealed to individuals and entrepreneurs who depend on waterways for transportation and business to adhere strictly to safety protocols.
“We cannot afford to let negligence or ignorance result in loss of life. Adhering to safety measures is critical—it is not optional,” he concluded.
