Meta on Friday announced that it would be removing the restrictions on the Facebook and Instagram accounts of US presidential candidate Donald Trump.
These restrictions were initially imposed after his supporters violently stormed the US Capitol in 2021.
Meta stated that as the Republican Party nominee, Trump would no longer be subjected to the heightened suspension penalties.
His accounts were originally suspended indefinitely following the Capitol attack, and were later reinstated in February 2023 with the threat of penalties for future violations.
However, Meta has now lifted this additional restriction, allowing political expression from presidential nominees.
It emphasized that candidates are still bound by the same Community Standards as all users, including those aimed at preventing hate speech and incitement to violence.
Trump, who was the first former president to be convicted of a crime, had also been banned from Twitter and YouTube, but has since been communicating primarily through his own platform, Truth Social.
His Facebook profile, which has 34 million users, now features content from Truth Social as well as invitations to rallies and campaign videos.
