Weather Alert: NiMet Cautions against Flash Floods in Northern and Southern Regions

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected rain and thunderstorms nationwide from Monday to Wednesday, cautioning about potential flash floods in certain regions. 

In its weather forecast, issued on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet anticipated morning thunderstorms on Monday, with moderate rain expected in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina.

Thunderstorms with moderate rain are also likely in the afternoon or evening across the whole region, particularly with a high chance of flooding in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, and Bauchi during this period.

In the central region, there are chances of light rain over parts of Benue, Abuja, Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa in the morning. Later in the day, light rain is expected in parts of Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Niger, Benue, and Abuja.

The southern region is predicted to have cloudy skies with the possibility of light rain in parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa in the morning hours.

For the rest of the day, light rain is expected in parts of Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Anambra, Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States. NiMet expects a significant risk of flooding in areas of Oyo, Ogun, Edo, and Delta during the forecast period.

On Tuesday, NiMet anticipates morning thunderstorms in the northern region, accompanied by moderate rain in parts of Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Zamfara.

Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are also expected to cover the entire region later in the day.

The central region is forecasted to experience intermittent light rains over parts of Abuja, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, and Benue during the forecast. Southern regions are expected to have cloudy skies with intermittent light rains in Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Lago, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom during this time. There is a high chance of flooding in areas of Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States during this forecast period.

On Wednesday, NiMet expects morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall in parts of Taraba and Kaduna. Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms and moderate rain are predicted in parts of Borno, Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Adamawa.

In the central region, light rains are expected in Nasarawa, Niger, and Abuja during the morning. Afternoon or evening rains are anticipated in parts of Abuja, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, and Benue. In the southern region, cloudy skies with intermittent light rains are expected in parts of Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos, Edo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, and Cross River in the morning, with light rain expected throughout the region later in the day and high chances of flooding in parts of Bayelsa.

NiMet has advised the public to refrain from driving during heavy rain and to activate emergency responses in areas at risk of flash floods immediately.

They also advised ensuring warm clothing for vulnerable individuals due to low night-time temperatures, securing loose items to avoid accidents, and disconnecting electrical appliances to prevent hazards. Additionally, NiMet reminded airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for effective flight planning.
