Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has emphasized the need for Nigeria to honor entrepreneurs and nation builders over politicians, arguing that national awards such as GCFR and GCON should be granted to those who create jobs and enhance productivity.
Speaking in Abuja at the public launch of “The Chronicles of a Legend,” a biography honoring the life and contributions of Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, Esama of Benin Kingdom, Obi recognized Igbinedion as a genuine Nigerian icon deserving of not only recognition but also practical national support for his influence in education, business, and philanthropy.
“We live in a country where the truly deserving are overlooked," he remarked. "Igbinedion has provided employment for 17,000 people through his educational initiatives alone.
I concur with the SGF that he can achieve even more, but we must seize this opportunity to change how we honor individuals,” Obi stated. He reiterated that Nigeria's top honors should represent productivity and national contribution.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, praised Igbinedion for his outstanding contributions to aviation, education, and cultural preservation, describing him as "a remarkable and extraordinary Nigerian whose life epitomizes resilience, patriotism, and visionary leadership across various sectors."
He asserted that Igbinedion is worthy of not only accolades but also extensive support from the government to inspire more entrepreneurs to follow his example.
In a personal commitment, Obi pledged to contribute annually to the Esama Endowment Fund for at least the next ten years.
“Endowment is not a one-time payment; it is ongoing. I guarantee that my small contribution to this fund will continue each year for at least the next decade and throughout my lifetime because Igbinedion's contributions are significant,” he affirmed.
Additionally, former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, commended Igbinedion's unparalleled vision and humility.
“Envisioning the establishment of an airline, a bank, and a university 30 years ago reflects the caliber of person he is,” Saraki remarked.
"Furthermore, his humility and kindness are remarkable; he has served everyone, irrespective of their status."
