I Learnt Yoruba From Youtube - Singer, Teni

POSTED ON December 1, 2023 •   Entertainment      BY Suleiman Jimoh

Popular Nigerian singer Teniola Apata, better known as Teni, has shared an unconventional aspect of her life, disclosing that she learned to speak Yoruba through YouTube. Despite being of Yoruba descent, the 31-year-old singer attributed her language proficiency to watching Yoruba movies on the video-sharing platform while in the United States.

During a recent episode of the Zero Conditions podcast, Teni candidly opened up about her linguistic journey, stating, "Do you know how I learnt to speak Yoruba? It was when I went to America. I learnt it from YouTube. I was watching Yoruba films like mad." The revelation provides a unique insight into the diverse ways individuals acquire language skills in the digital age.

In the same podcast interview, Teni disclosed a personal shift in her habits, sharing that she started drinking alcohol in 2021. Prior to that, the singer abstained from both alcohol and smoking. Teni clarified that her decision to embrace alcohol was solely "for fun," marking a departure from her previous teetotaler lifestyle.

The singer's openness about her language learning journey and evolving preferences offers fans a glimpse into her multifaceted personality. As a prominent figure in the Nigerian entertainment scene, Teni's revelations resonate with a global audience, showcasing the diverse and unexpected paths individuals take on their personal and cultural journeys.

Teni is sisters with fellow singer Niniola.
