Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, has called on the necessary authorities to investigate the continued detention of #EndSARS protesters, three years after their arrest.
In a statement issued on the third anniversary of the protests, Obi said that the continued detention of the protesters is a violation of their fundamental rights and a mockery of the rule of law.
"It is saddening that three years after the #EndSARS protests, some of the protesters are still languishing in detention," Obi said. "This is a clear violation of their fundamental rights and a mockery of the rule of law."
Obi called on the authorities to immediately release the detained protesters or charge them in court if there is any evidence against them.
"The continued detention of these protesters is a stain on our democracy," Obi said. "We must not allow this to continue."
Obi also expressed his disappointment that the government has not learned from the #EndSARS protests.
"It is unfortunate that our nation did not pick the appropriate lessons from the #EndSARS incident," Obi said. "Instead, we have continued to retrogress on many fronts."
Obi said that the #EndSARS protests were a wake-up call for the government to address the issues of police brutality and bad governance.
"The #EndSARS protests were a clear message from the Nigerian people that they are tired of injustice and bad governance," Obi said. "The government must listen to the cries of the people and take action to address the issues that led to the protests."
Obi said that he is committed to building a new Nigeria where justice will reign and the rule of law will be respected.
"Our journey to a new and better nation will start with respect for our constitution and obedience to the rule of law," Obi said. "Our democracy must be founded on respect for the rights of every citizen."
