The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, argues that combating corruption in Nigeria is not as challenging as commonly believed.
He made this statement during a discussion on youth and leadership opportunities with students at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi on Friday.
“We often discuss corruption, but I want to emphasize that tackling it isn't as hard as people portray. If you, your spouse, and children refrain from stealing, you’ve already decreased corruption by 60 percent.
“During my tenure as chairman of a bank, many directors were engaged in taking loans from their institutions. “You can verify in any bank where I held a directorial or chairmanship role whether I was ever granted a loan. Check if anything was ever amiss during my time there.
“I served as a state governor for eight years, and I challenge anyone to show where even a kobo of Anambra State misappropriation was connected to me,” he stated.
He asserted that corruption can be effectively addressed, reiterating that if he becomes president in 2027, he will limit his term to just four years. “If I get the chance to be Nigeria’s president in 2027, I will only serve for four years.
It might be even shorter, but it will never extend beyond that. I won’t remain a single day longer than four years.
“People question the impact of just four years. However, four years can make a significant difference, as you can establish civility and introduce laws that promote good governance,” he remarked.
