Farotimi supports Obi’s proposal for a one-term presidency, stating that “Obasanjo and Buhari wasted eight years.”
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, has advised President Bola Tinubu to learn from Argentina's President Javier Gerardo Milei in dealing with Nigeria’s economic challenges.
Obi noted that Milei took charge of a struggling economy, with more than 52% of Argentinians living in poverty in 2024 and an inflation rate exceeding 200%.
However, under Milei's leadership, Argentina has seen a reduction in the poverty rate to 38.1% and a decline in extreme poverty to 8.2%, with inflation stabilizing at about 2-3% monthly over two years.
Obi shared this on his X account, emphasizing the dire situation in Nigeria where hunger and poverty affect millions.
He referenced a United Nations report indicating that 34 million Nigerians face severe food insecurity and that 63% of the population—approximately 133 million—live in multidimensional poverty.
He pointed out that inflation approaches 30%, and unemployment has devastated the once-thriving middle class, causing families to fall into poverty. Obi criticized ineffective leadership, stating, “Bad leaders lack the capacity and compassion to prioritize the Nigerian people.”
In a separate discussion, human rights advocate Dele Farotimi endorsed Obi’s single-term presidency idea, claiming past leaders have mismanaged longer terms without achieving meaningful progress.
During an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Farotimi remarked, “Obasanjo had eight years; what did he accomplish? Buhari also had eight years—what transpired? President Tinubu has served two years, yet he seems to be regressing us by 50 years.
Duration in office isn't the issue; it is about the quality of actions taken during that time.”
He reiterated that making a lasting impact isn’t contingent on extended tenure.
