Don't Travel Without Proper Documentation, Dabiri-Erewa Warns Nigerians

POSTED ON November 23, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole •   VIEWS 69

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, has issued a crucial advisory, urging Nigerians traveling abroad to ensure they possess proper documentation to avoid irregularities and potential repercussions. This counsel was delivered during her visit to Nigerians in a shelter in Brampton, Canada, where she underscored the importance of compliance with immigration regulations.

Dabiri-Erewa specifically cautioned Nigerians against attempting to travel to Canada without the necessary documentation or seeking asylum, emphasizing that the current global climate has made immigration procedures more stringent. The message was relayed through a statement released on Thursday via the commission's handle on X, as detailed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols Unit at NIDCOM.

Expressing sympathy for those currently residing in shelters, Dabiri-Erewa urged prospective travelers to reconsider embarking on journeys without proper documentation. The prevailing challenges in many countries, she noted, make such ventures increasingly precarious, stressing that the potential consequences often outweigh the perceived benefits.

In response to the complex situation, the Mayor of Brampton has pledged additional support by making 800 more beds available for shelter, according to Vivian Eruka, who runs the Bethel food bank and collaborates with individuals in shelters. This commitment aligns with efforts to address the evolving needs of those seeking refuge and assistance.

As global immigration policies undergo changes and enforcement becomes more stringent, Dabiri-Erewa's advisory serves as a timely reminder for individuals to adhere to legal requirements, fostering safer and more secure travel experiences for Nigerians abroad.
