The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, has urged the Israeli government to rethink its plan to escalate military actions in Gaza, cautioning that such a decision will exacerbate the humanitarian crisis and result in more casualties.
Starmer conveyed his message through a statement on his official X account on Friday, emphasizing the UK's disapproval of Israel's recent military actions.
He stated that increased military operations are unproductive, asserting that they will neither resolve the conflict nor facilitate hostage negotiations but will escalate violence.
Starmer's remarks also indicate the UK's choice for restraint over aggression. He stated, “The Israeli Government's choice to intensify its offensive in Gaza is misguided, and we strongly encourage it to reconsider immediately. T
his action will not help end this conflict or ensure the hostages' release; it will only lead to additional bloodshed.” He highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, expressing concern over deteriorating living conditions and the conditions of hostages.
He called for a ceasefire and an increase in humanitarian aid, pushing for immediate relief efforts. Starmer emphasized that Hamas must "leave and disarm," indicating the UK's position that any future governance in Gaza should exclude the militant organization.
He remarked, "Every day, the humanitarian situation in Gaza gets worse, and hostages held by Hamas are in horrific and inhumane conditions. We need a ceasefire, a boost in humanitarian aid, the release of all hostages by Hamas, and a negotiated settlement. Hamas cannot be part of Gaza's future and must exit and disarm."
Starmer outlined the UK's broader diplomatic strategy, reaffirming long-standing support for the two-state solution as a path to peace.
He stressed the importance of collaboration with allies, indicating that Britain's efforts are part of a coordinated international initiative rather than an isolated diplomatic endeavor.
He cautioned that peace is slowly becoming unattainable due to a lack of trust and real dialogue, urging both sides to prioritize diplomacy over violence.
Starmer concluded, “Alongside our allies, we are developing a long-term strategy to achieve peace in the region as part of a two-state solution, ultimately fostering a brighter future for both Palestinians and Israelis.
However, without both parties committing to good faith negotiations, that possibility is fading quickly. Our message is straightforward: a diplomatic resolution is feasible, but both sides must refrain from destructive paths.”
