Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, has agreed to integrate Japan's "My Number" identification card functions into iPhones at the request of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
The announcement was made by Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yoshimasa Hayashi, on Thursday.
The Japanese government aims to streamline administrative efficiency by integrating tax and social security data into a single identification card.
The integration of "My Number" functions onto iPhones is part of this broader initiative.
"Prime Minister Kishida and Mr. Tim Cook confirmed that My Number card functions will be put on iPhones next spring," Hayashi announced during a regular news conference.
This decision followed a video conference between Kishida and Cook earlier in the day.
The move reflects Japan’s ongoing efforts to enhance its digital infrastructure and the cooperation of global technology companies in supporting these initiatives.
