Social media platform X said it will begin to eliminate accounts that violate X's rules on platform manipulation and spam.
X, in a statement on its Safety account, said that the crackdown has been a long time coming for X CEO Elon Musk, who has spoken openly about prioritizing the fight against spam since late 2022.
"X is taking a big swing at spam and bots," said the statement.
The sheer volume of spam was a major sticking point for Musk during his acquisition of X.
Musk accused the company of underreporting the number of bots on the platform. Ironically, Musk now boasts about record traffic on X, without clarifying if these numbers include spam or bots.
X's safety team warns that their wide net approach to removing spam and bots may lead to a decrease in follower counts for some users.
