X (formerly known as Twitter) announced today that all Premium subscribers will have access to the AI chatbot Grok starting later this week.
This comes after Grok was previously exclusive to the higher-tier Premium+ subscribers.
The announcement was made by X owner Elon Musk himself on the platform.
Grok, developed by Musk's AI company xAI, is a large language model chatbot that promises users the ability to ask questions and receive responses on a wider range of topics compared to other AI chatbots.
This decision follows xAI's move earlier this month to open-source Grok, making the underlying code publicly available.
Speculation suggests this wider access to Grok, both through the open-source release and for X Premium users, could be part of Musk's strategy to position xAI as a leader in the AI development race, particularly in the wake of his ongoing legal dispute with OpenAI.
Previously, access to Grok required a Premium+ subscription, costing $16 per month.
X Premium, on the other hand, starts at $8 per month. This move allows a wider user base on X to experience Grok's capabilities.
While specific details on how Grok will function for Premium users haven't been revealed yet, X is expected to roll out the feature sometime this week.
Analysts predict this could be a significant draw for X users, especially those interested in exploring the potential of AI chatbots.
