Dangote Cement Plc has urged stakeholders in Nigeria's housing sector to adopt affordable mass housing schemes as a viable solution to the country's housing challenges.
Speaking at the ongoing Africa International Housing Show (AIHS), the company's National Sales Director, Dolapo Alli, highlighted the need for collaboration among essential players in the industry.
He pointed out that tackling housing issues necessitates the combined efforts of government bodies, private developers, non-profit organizations, and communities.
According to him, the government should consider public-private partnerships (PPPs) to aid in the development of mass housing.
"Through PPP frameworks, the government can kickstart the construction of new estates, while firms in the building and construction industry can receive tax incentives and credits to promote affordable housing initiatives," Alli mentioned during the company's Special Day at the event.
He emphasized that mass housing remains a crucial approach to addressing housing shortages, particularly in rapidly urbanizing areas, and has been successful in other countries.
While appreciating the Federal Government's ongoing efforts to implement mass housing programs, Alli insisted that more action is necessary.
He acknowledged projects such as the Renewed Hope Housing Initiative as a commendable move, especially in improving homeownership opportunities for low- and middle-income Nigerians.
"However, given the nation's significant housing deficit, estimated in the millions, there is an urgent need for deeper collaboration between the public and private sectors to unlock innovative financing, streamline regulatory procedures, and enhance delivery," he added.
Alli also pointed out several ongoing challenges that impede affordable housing in Nigeria, including rapid urbanization, high population growth, lack of awareness, expensive land acquisition, rising construction costs, inadequate infrastructure, inaccurate housing data, and limited access to long-term, low-cost financing.
He mentioned that Dangote Cement's ongoing support for the Africa International Housing Show showcases the company's belief in the event's role in generating impactful ideas and fostering partnerships to promote shelter solutions nationwide.
Alli called on all levels of government to establish enabling policies and provide land to support the nationwide expansion of mass housing.
Dangote Cement Plc is one of the sponsors for the 2025 edition of the Africa International Housing Show, which wraps up on Friday, August 1.
