The Shell Petroleum Development of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo) In 2023 collectively contributed $142.5 million to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
This includes $112.5 million from SPDC and $30 million from SNEPCo, an increase from the $59.04 million and $20.73 million respectively that were contributed in 2022.
According to Communications, Media and NGO Relations Manager, Bamidele Odugbesan, the contributions were made on behalf of the Shell companies and their partners - Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC); TotalEnergies, EP Nigeria Limited; NAOC; and Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited - as part of their statutory obligations to the interventionist agency.
Igo Weli, SPDC Director and Country Head of Corporate Relations, expressed that their support for NDDC is aligned with their commitment to the development of the Niger Delta region, which includes various social investments in health and education.
He also emphasized their ongoing efforts to fulfill their responsibilities to communities through statutory payments and collaborative projects with stakeholders.
The statement highlighted that Shell Companies in Nigeria have been actively involved in community development initiatives since the 1960s, benefiting numerous Nigerians.
These initiatives include educational support, such as secondary school grants, university grants, and scholarship grants, as well as the Health-in-Motion program which provides free medical services to communities.
Additionally, the global Shell LiveWIRE entrepreneurship program has provided training and mentorship to 73 businesses, resulting in 97 employment opportunities for Nigerians.
