Google unveiled a new initiative at its I/O 2024 developer conference aimed at expanding the reach of Android apps beyond the Play Store.
The company introduced the "Engage" SDK, an invite-only tool designed to help developers re-engage users with their installed apps and discover new ones.
Over 35 developers, including Spotify, Pinterest, Tumblr, TikTok, and Shopify, are already testing the new SDK.
The goal is to connect the right audience with the right content at the right time, by showcasing engaging content, promotions, and deals within a unique "surface" on Android devices.
This immersive, full-screen experience will automatically curate content from installed apps, allowing users to launch directly into specific app experiences with a single tap.
The company envisions this as a way to drive users back to entertainment offerings, browsing sessions, or other app-specific tasks.
Developers will be able to leverage deep links to direct users to specific pages within their apps. Google demonstrated this concept with a series of widgets that, when tapped, opened corresponding tasks in different shopping apps. This suggests that the new surface could group content from similar apps, encouraging cross-app engagement.
Spotify, Reddit, Uber Eats, and others could utilize this feature to seamlessly bring users back into specific experiences, like playlists, upvotes, or food orders. Tumblr, for example, aims to leverage Engage to expand its unique community culture to new audiences.
The consumer-facing feature goes beyond reminders, as it will also include personalized recommendations and promotions to entice users to take action. Moreover, the surface will recommend uninstalled apps using "compelling content" from those apps.
The Engage SDK demonstrates Google's continued efforts to leverage its integration with the Android OS to create innovative experiences that benefit both developers and users. By providing a new avenue for app discovery and re-engagement, Google is poised to further enrich the Android ecosystem.
