The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State has emphasized its determination to apprehend any motorcyclist riding on highways without a crash helmet.
The State Sector Commander, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, issued this warning in an interview on Sunday in Akure, the state capital.
Ibitoye stated that the corps has intensified its efforts to arrest, seize, and prosecute motorcyclists who operate on highways without helmets.
He pointed out that accidents involving motorcyclists not wearing helmets often lead to severe injuries, including broken skulls, limbs, and thighs.
He advised motorcycle riders to avoid highways whenever possible but, if necessary, to wear crash helmets and avoid racing with vehicles, particularly larger ones.
"Do not assert any rights as a vulnerable road user; allow vehicles to pass and prioritize your safety," he cautioned. There are penalties for motorcyclists riding on highways without helmets.
"Motorcycles will be confiscated, and fines will be imposed, but our main message focuses on promoting helmet use and safety first," he stated.
The commander urged traditional leaders, religious figures, and titleholders who ride motorcycles without helmets to abandon such practices for their safety. "Don’t assume that being a titleholder or a religious person means you should only wear a turban or cap.
If you wish to uphold your titles, avoid riding. Prioritize your safety over your title."
He added, "Accidents do not discriminate; they do not recognize religion, tradition, or titles. When an accident occurs, it affects you as a motorcycle rider. If you must ride, wear your helmet, or better yet, opt to travel in a vehicle or car to avoid unexpected fatality," Ibitoye concluded.
