The Federal Government and the doctors on strike have come to an agreement about the current strike.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed after a meeting between the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) leadership and the minister of labor and employment, Chris Ngige.
Along with other government representatives, Dr. Uche Ojinmah, President of NMA, and Dr. Emeka Orji, his counterpart from NARD, attended the meeting, which began on Friday evening and finished on Saturday.
Olajide Oshundun, the ministry's spokesman, informed journalists that an agreement had been reached to end the resident doctors' five-day nationwide warning strike. The parties included the Federal Government, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), and the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).
He stated that "all eight issues raised by the striking resident doctors have been addressed; the fund for the payment of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) has been captured in the 2023 Appropriation, and the payment would commence when the operation of the 2023 budget begins."
He continued by saying that before going on strike, the federal government had instructed resident doctors across the nation to engage in more social engagement and persuasion at the state level.
The participants in the discussion agreed that states cannot be forced to domesticate the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) or to contribute in an amount equal to that of the federal government.
