Socio-political activist Aisha Yesufu has expressed concerns regarding the makeup of the recently formed African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.
She urged its leaders to prioritize meaningful inclusion of young people and women in policymaking positions.
Yesufu, a well-known supporter of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for 2023, shared her thoughts on her X account on Wednesday.
She stated, “Dear Coalition (ADC), the roles of women and youth leaders should not be symbolic or merely for show.”
She emphasized that the decision-making table should not be dominated solely by older men. “Women and youth need to be integral to the decision-making process, not just an afterthought or token representation,” Yesufu noted.
She called for proactive involvement from young Nigerians and women, highlighting the significance of their numbers and innovative ideas. “Now is the time for women and youth to make their voices heard. Join! Participate in leadership! Be involved with delegates and floor members. Overwhelm positively! Bring fresh ideas to the table,” she urged.
Her remarks came after the official launch of the ADC as the new opposition coalition platform for the 2027 elections, aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The event, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, saw former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola designated as interim National Chairman and Secretary of the ADC coalition, respectively.
The party’s founding National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, stated that ADC leaders willingly stepped aside to allow new leadership to guide the party in a different direction.
