Meta-owned WhatsApp has firmly denied allegations of Tesla CEO Elon Musk's accusation of exporting user data, calling them incorrect.
WhatsApp CEO Will Cathart responded to Musk’s claims on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Many have said this already, but worth repeating: this is not correct,” Cathart stated.
He emphasized that WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted and are not sent to or exported to WhatsApp nightly.
Cathart reiterated the company’s commitment to security, stating, “We take security seriously.”
He also advised users to utilize cloud backup options provided by their phone’s operating system, either Apple or Google and noted that end-to-end encryption can be used for these backups as well.
An X user had previously claimed that WhatsApp exports user data every night, which is then analyzed and used for targeted advertising, effectively making users the product rather than the customer.
Musk responded to this post, saying, “WhatsApp exports your user data every night. Some people still think it is secure.”
This incident is not the first time Musk has criticized Meta and its platforms. Earlier this month, he condemned Meta for its advertising practices, describing the company as “super greedy” and accusing it of being overly opportunistic in taking credit for advertisers’ campaigns.
Cathart’s responses aimed to clarify the misconceptions and assure users of WhatsApp’s commitment to their privacy and data security.
