Threads to Begin Showing Live Sport Scores

In a move designed to elevate fan engagement and challenge Twitter's dominance in real-time sports updates, Meta's microblogging platform Threads is now featuring live NBA scores.

Announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Friday, this integration marks the first step in Threads' journey to become a comprehensive hub for sports discussion.

"Live scores are coming to Threads," Zuckerberg declared via a post on, ironically, Twitter. "We're starting with @NBA, and we'll soon add other leagues too."

This announcement signals Meta's intention to carve a niche in the ever-competitive social media landscape, specifically targeting sports enthusiasts.

The user experience for live scores on Threads is designed for seamless integration. Fans can search for games at any stage – pre-match, during the action, or even within a day after the final buzzer.

A pre-game search will display the start time, while an ongoing game search will reveal the current score. For post-game searches, the final score is readily available.

Additionally, tapping on a team's logo directs users to dedicated conversation threads, fostering a sense of community among fans of the same team.

This strategic move by Meta is widely seen as a direct challenge to Twitter, which has established itself as a go-to platform for live sports updates for nearly a decade.

With basketball emerging as one of the most popular topics on Threads, and the NBA Threads community boasting high activity, Meta is strategically leveraging existing user interest. 

Company representatives, speaking to TechCrunch, expressed their belief that live scores will position Threads as the premier platform for sports discourse, allowing fans to effortlessly connect and engage in discussions about their favourite teams.

While the live score feature is currently undergoing testing with a gradual rollout planned, Meta has confirmed its intention to expand it to encompass other sports leagues in the near future.

This, coupled with the recent introduction of the "trending now" feature in the US, underscores Meta's commitment to making Threads a dynamic platform for real-time conversations on a wide range of topics.
