Sri Lanka Sports Minister Ousted Amid Assassination Allegations

POSTED ON November 27, 2023 •   SPORTS      BY Segun Adewole

The sports minister in Sri Lanka, Roshan Ranasinghe, was dismissed from his position on Monday, mere hours after levelling startling accusations against President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Ranasinghe asserted that the president had plotted to assassinate him in response to his efforts to root out corruption within the country's cricket board.

The unfolding political saga reached its climax ahead of Monday's weekly cabinet meeting, where officials confirmed Ranasinghe's sudden ousting. The sports minister had earlier taken to parliament to publicly air his fears, declaring, "I fear I could be killed over my work to clean up the cricket board."

The escalating confrontation between Ranasinghe and Wickremesinghe has brought to light longstanding tensions over the management of Sri Lanka Cricket, further exacerbated by the minister's bold allegations. Ranasinghe did not mince words, holding the president directly responsible for any harm that might befall him.

"If I am assassinated on the road, the president and his chief of staff will be responsible," Ranasinghe proclaimed, intensifying the already charged atmosphere surrounding the power struggle within Sri Lanka's political and sporting spheres.

The sudden dismissal of the sports minister raises questions about the political stability of the nation, with citizens anxiously watching as the controversy unfolds. As the government reshuffles its cabinet in the wake of these explosive claims, the fate of Sri Lanka's cricket board and the broader implications for the country's governance remain uncertain. The international community is likely to closely monitor the situation, awaiting developments in this high-stakes political and sporting drama.
