Raphael Varane, the 31-year-old French defender, announced his departure from Manchester United on Tuesday, confirming his contract will not be renewed at the end of the season.

Varane joined the club from Real Madrid in 2021 for a fee of £34 million ($43 million) and has since made 93 appearances, contributing two goals. Notably, he played a role in United's League Cup victory in 2023, the club's first trophy in six years.

In a heartfelt message on social media, Varane expressed his gratitude to the fans, stating, "To you guys, supporters of Manchester United, it's been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wear that shirt. The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Man United player was insane, the atmosphere was amazing. I fell in love with the club, with the fans. You have to play for Man United to understand what that represents."

Despite a challenging season for United, currently eighth in the Premier League with 14 defeats, Varane expressed optimism for the future, noting the arrival of new owners with a "clear plan and a great strategy."

Manager Erik ten Hag hopes Varane can contribute to the team's success before his departure, potentially playing a role in the FA Cup final later this month. Ten Hag stated, "We plan [for] him. Definitely for the last games. Not tomorrow but we hope for Sunday and then, of course, for the last game (the FA Cup final)."

Manchester United issued a statement acknowledging Varane's contribution to the team, praising his "class and experience." The club highlighted his "unflappable work at the heart of the defence" as a defining characteristic of his time at Old Trafford.

Varane's departure marks the end of a chapter for the decorated defender, who boasts an impressive resume, including four Champions League titles and three La Liga titles with Real Madrid. He also played a crucial role in France's 2018 World Cup victory and their journey to the 2022 final.
