President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged young Nigerians in the digital media sector to utilize their platforms as instruments for national advancement, unity, and economic empowerment instead of promoting division.
Speaking at the Progressives Digital Media Summit held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the President encouraged content creators, social media influencers, and tech innovators to fact-check information before disseminating it and to leverage their digital expertise to enhance society.
The summit, titled ‘Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development,’ brought together stakeholders from government and the digital ecosystem.
“Your generation recognizes the significance of this moment. You are harnessing digital tools to innovate, educate, and advocate for accountability.
As your influence expands, so too should our collective sense of purpose and responsibility. Nigeria travel packages.
“I encourage you to keep utilizing digital platforms to foster the progress of our nation. Establish businesses that create jobs. Generate content that inspires and unites. Utilize your influence to promote togetherness, not division,” Tinubu stated.
The President characterized digital media as a transformative force and praised the creativity and resilience of Nigerian youth, who are redefining the country’s future through technology and online platforms.
“From creating innovative applications to developing vibrant online communities, you are showcasing the determination that is changing the narrative of what is achievable in Nigeria. You are not awaiting the future – you are constructing it,” he remarked.
He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital economy through initiatives like the National Digital Innovation Fund and policies aimed at fostering a robust startup ecosystem. In a goodwill message, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, pointed out how digital platforms have become pivotal to political communication worldwide, referencing recent elections in the United States and Germany.
“Social media is not a fair battleground,” he noted. “It is chaotic, often unregulated, and filled with divisive content.
Deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation are now common tactics against political opponents. Posts are motivated by clicks – not facts. Misinformation spreads five times faster than the truth.”
He expressed hope that the summit would contribute to developing better strategies for combating fake news and maintaining the integrity of online discourse.
Summit convener and Special Assistant to the President on New Media, Segun Dada, reflected on how digital platforms have evolved from personal tools to engines of influence and national significance in less than a decade.
He emphasized the importance of responsible and ethical engagement in the digital space, particularly concerning data privacy, AI usage, and national unity.
