The national electricity power grid in Nigeria on Saturday crashed to 70.60 megawatts, causing another round of blackout across the country.
This marked the seventh collapse of the national grid in 2024, with previous incidents occurring on February 4, April 10, April 15, March 11, March 12, and March 28.
During the inauguration of the 31-member Presidential Economic Coordination Council in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu expressed his disappointment at the low electricity generation in the country, describing it as shameful.
He emphasized the need to work together to improve the oil and gas sector, increase electricity generation, and enhance distribution throughout Nigeria.
According to data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria, power generation dropped to 70.60MW on Saturday.
Despite an initial increase to 3,976.24MW in the morning, it plummeted to 1,075.08MW at 3 pm before crashing to 70.60MW at 4 pm.
At that time, only the Trans-Amadi Gas Turbine Power Plant in Rivers State was supplying power to the grid, generating just 0.80MW.
Efforts were made by TCN engineers to restore the grid, with power generation slightly rising to 72.30MW at 5 pm.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the grid collapse and stated that all its interfaces in the TCN stations were out of supply, affecting services in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states.
