In response to the Federal Government's decision to end fuel subsidies, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has demanded a return to the previous situation.
After the National Executive Council (NEC) of the congress had an emergency meeting on Friday in Abuja, Mr. Festus Osifo, the TUC president, addressed the media.
Osifo claims that the Federal Government's unilateral decision to end the subsidies has angered the TUC.
According to him, the TUC had expected the government to work with organized labor.
"Having noticed this, we wish to announce that the NEC in session decided that talks with the federal administration should continue while asking that the government return to the pre-crisis status quo.
"Given that we met with the administration on Wednesday, the status quo ante should be preserved while conversations continue.
"During that conversation, they asked to know what we were thinking and putting up while simultaneously giving us a list of everything they would do."
He stated, "We informed them of the lists of the items we want to bring forth, we will not submit them now but put them forward to our organs, to discuss and seek a mandate from them of the things we may put forward."
Osifo asserts that the TUC's future course of action will depend on how the government responds to its demands.
"We won't meet with government representatives until Sunday.
"The TUC will present its requests when the conference is over, and our course of action will depend on how they respond," the speaker stated.
While this was going on, the Nigeria Labour Congress had its NEC meeting and said that if the issue of the elimination of fuel subsidies and increase in petrol prices is not resolved by June 7, it will go on a nationwide strike.
