2027 Election: Lp Respond To Atiku's Merger Plea

POSTED ON November 16, 2023 •   Politics      BY Samuel O . Adeniyi

The Labour Party (LP) denied a merger plan with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2027 general elections.

LP spokesman Obiora Ifoh gave the disclosure on Monday.

He stated that the party is yet to hold a post-mortem analysis of its 2023 presidential election performance.

He acknowledged the party's uncertain future and promised to inform Nigerians of any decisions made.

Ifoh's statement comes in response to a proposal by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The PDP's presidential candidate in the 2023 election suggested that opposition parties unite to defeat the APC in the next election.

Atiku had expressed concerns about Nigeria's potential descent into a "one-party dictatorship" .

He then urged opposition parties to form a united front against the APC.

The LP, in its response, clarified that Atiku's call was merely a proposal.

Ifoh hinted at a merger's potential to strengthen democracy in Nigeria, which they believe is currently under autocratic rule.

However, the ruling APC, criticized Atiku asserting that he and his party have consistently failed in elections since 2015 and have been unable to provide effective opposition to Nigerians.

Atiku, a former Vice President to Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo has unsuccessfully contested to be President since 1993.

His call for a merger in the upcoming 2027 presidential is a bid to increase his chance at victory in the election.
