The Rivers State Government has urged for enhanced collaboration among security agencies, community leaders, and residents to address sea piracy, illegal oil bunkering, and various other criminal activities in the state.
This call was made by the State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd), during a town hall meeting with security stakeholders that took place in Opobo Town on Saturday.
Represented by the State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, Ibas stressed the importance of joint efforts to protect vital government properties and infrastructure.
A statement released by Hector Igbikiowubo, the media aide to the State Sole Administrator, shared this information with reporters.
Ibas declared, “We are here to ensure you collaborate effectively with the Local Government Administrator to safeguard government infrastructure and essential assets.”
He assured community members that the government would prioritize healthcare, education, road improvements, and other welfare issues to uplift living conditions in the area.
In his introductory remarks, the Administrator of Opobo/Nkoro LGA, Mr. Frederick Apiafi, characterized the meeting as both timely and essential, encouraging attendees to partake in open and constructive conversations.
While recognizing the peaceful disposition of the community, he pointed out the distinct security challenges present in the region, such as sea piracy, theft of fishing gear, illegal oil bunkering, and unauthorized vigilante groups.
Apiafi emphasized that a safer Opobo/Nkoro necessitates proactive monitoring, community engagement, and stronger support for security forces.
He expressed hope that the meeting would produce effective strategies to reduce crime at the community level. The interactive session saw contributions from representatives of traditional leaders, youth organizations, women's groups, and other stakeholders from the Opobo and Nkoro kingdoms.
Concerns raised included the need for increased security patrols to deter piracy and oil theft, bolstering local surveillance systems, and assisting lawful vigilante groups to function within legal parameters.
The delegation from the Sole Administrator included heads of security agencies and Permanent Secretaries from the state government, highlighting the administration's dedication to inclusive security and development initiatives.
The Rivers State Government committed to documenting all stakeholder recommendations for prompt action.
This initiative reinforces the administration's determination to promote peace, security, and sustainable development across all local government areas.
