The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, has urged politicians from the Northern Region to postpone their presidential aspirations until 2031.
He made this statement during a two-day Interactive Session on Government-Citizens’ Engagement held in Kaduna.
The event, themed “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizens’ Engagement for National Unity”, was organized by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation.
Akume praised the foundation for creating a platform for government and citizens to discuss ways to improve governance, democracy, and development.
He noted that President Bola Tinubu's administration has been in power for two years and two months, with significant achievements.
Akume stated, “Tinubu promised fairness in governance and has delivered on that promise. We should support those who are performing well to further enhance their efforts.”
He pointed out that misinformation exists in some media regarding Tinubu's administration, which has bolstered the country's security, rejuvenated agriculture through various initiatives, and improved food security and infrastructure.
He emphasized that Tinubu aims to lead Nigeria toward a better future and advised Northern politicians against joining any cause that might hinder the progress achieved under Tinubu.
“The president has positively impacted all regions and citizens,” he said, noting that the elimination of fuel subsidies has increased funds for state governments to undertake major projects.
Akume also described the Renewed Hope Agenda as a commitment to restoring hope across all regions. He highlighted accomplishments in areas such as diplomacy, transportation, job creation, education, tax reforms, local government autonomy, national security, and anti-corruption efforts.
He added that Tinubu has established a strong foundation for a renewed Nigeria through visionary leadership and dedication to delivering democratic benefits fairly across the country.
Akume asserted that numerous individuals from the Northern Region have been appointed to key positions by Tinubu and are performing admirably. He dismissed the notion that the Northern Region is excluded from national progress, citing ongoing infrastructure projects.
He reiterated that given Tinubu's achievements over the past two years and two months, Northern politicians should set aside their presidential ambitions until 2031 and focus on supporting the current administration.
The event also brought together various appointees from Tinubu’s administration in the Northern Region to engage with the citizens, including the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, Malam Ali M. Ali.
