Nigeria has a rich history of worker activism. The first Labour Day celebrations in the country date back to 1980 when the People Redemption Party of Kano State recognised it as a public holiday.
May 1st subsequently became Nigeria's Workers Day because the International Congress of socialist parties in Europe declared May 1st as the ‘Workers Day of International Unity and Solidarity’.
Trade unions have continued to be a potent force in advocating for workers' rights, including fair wages, safe working environments, and social security.
Despite the progress made, Nigerian workers still face challenges. The country grapples with unemployment, a growing informal sector, and the ongoing struggle for a living wage.
