The state branches of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto and Kebbi have expressed their willingness to join any coalition aimed at ousting the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
In Sokoto, PDP stakeholders, led by former governor Aminu Tambuwal, revealed plans to leave the party for the newly formed coalition, All Democratic Alliance (ADA), while their Kebbi counterparts announced they are prepared to support any political alliance focused on displacing the APC at both state and national levels.
The ADA is among 110 new political parties seeking registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission.
A source in Sokoto stated that this decision was made during a stakeholders' meeting on Saturday.
The source, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the party would publicly announce its position by Monday. "We held an important meeting, with the main agenda being the merger into ADA.
We’re finalizing arrangements, and an official announcement is expected soon. I assure you that we will share our decision with the press for the public very shortly," the source said.
The presence of the party's National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, Tambuwal, state party chairman Aliyu Goronyo, and other members at the meeting has been confirmed. When reached for comment, the state Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Hassan Sanyinnawal, verified the stakeholders' meeting but refrained from discussing the endorsement of any party.
He stated, "Yes, we held a stakeholders' meeting yesterday at our leader Senator Tambuwal's house. The meeting was just our routine gathering, so there is no cause for alarm."
Meanwhile, PDP leaders in Kebbi reaffirmed their commitment to revitalizing the party and providing a credible alternative to the APC during a meeting in Birnin Kebbi on Saturday. Afterward, party chieftain Dr. Ibrahim Mera revealed that Kebbi PDP had resolved to back all legitimate efforts to remove the APC from power.
"We are prepared to collaborate with like-minded groups and political platforms dedicated to rescuing Nigeria from the difficulties inflicted by the APC-led government.
We also agreed to accelerate preparations for the state congress, pending approval from national leadership," he noted. Mera emphasized the party's intention to reinforce its grassroots structures and garner widespread support across the state in anticipation of future elections.
Additionally, Usman Suru, the state PDP Chairman, encouraged citizens to remain hopeful amid ongoing economic challenges, promising that improvement is on the way. "We recognize the struggles our people face.
The PDP is working toward offering a better alternative that focuses on the welfare and security of all Nigerians," he stated. The PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate in Kebbi, Gen. Aminu Bande (retd), criticized the APC administration, accusing it of severe mismanagement and political harassment.
"The current government in Kebbi has resorted to targeting opposition members through arbitrary arrests and intimidation," he asserted.
