Amnesty International has issued a plea to the Lagos State Government to halt the planned mass burial of 103 #EndSARS victims.
The call came after the state government's response to a leaked memo from the state's procurement agency addressed to the Ministry of Health.
Although the Lagos State Government confirmed the authenticity of the leaked memo, they clarified that the victims to be buried are not related to the controversial Lekki Tollgate shooting.
In response to this development, Amnesty's Director of Information, Isa Sanusi, released a statement on Monday, demanding an independent investigation into the matter.
He stressed the importance of conducting autopsies on the victims' bodies and revealing the identities of those to be buried.
The statement emphasized the urgency of halting the secret mass burial and instead conducting a thorough and impartial investigation into the killings.
Amnesty International called for justice to be served through fair trials for those suspected to be responsible for the deaths.
Furthermore, Sanusi expressed dismay at the Lagos state government's handling of the situation, noting that the bodies of 103 #EndSARS victims have been in their custody since October 2020 without acknowledgement.
In addition to halting the mass burial, Amnesty International urged for the immediate release of all individuals detained due to their involvement in the #EndSARS protests.
The statement emphasized that the victims and their families must have access to justice and effective remedies, including adequate compensation.
