The social network formerly known as Twitter has officially transitioned to using X.com for all its core systems.
Elon Musk, the Chief Executive Officer of X announced the domain transition today via his official account, he said; "All core systems are now on http://X.com".
Typing twitter.com in your browser will now redirect to Elon Musk’s new domain, x.com.
However, at the time of publication, results vary depending on the browser and whether the user is logged in.
A message now appears at the bottom of the X login page, stating, “We are letting you know that we are changing our URL, but your privacy and data protection settings remain the same.”
The domain transition is one of the more awkward aspects of Elon Musk’s rebranding effort.
Although many aspects of X migrated to the new branding long ago—including its official account, mobile apps, and "X Premium" (formerly Blue) subscriptions—the platform’s URLs have remained twitter.com since Musk initiated the switch to X.
The URL changes began in August of last year when some users were able to copy x.com links from the share sheet inside X’s iOS app.
This clumsy transition has been a boon to phishing attacks, according to Brian Krebs.
Musk has a long history with the x.com URL, having launched a business under that name in 1999, which eventually merged with what would become PayPal. For this modern-day iteration, Musk envisions X as a WeChat-like “everything app.”
The domain shift marks a significant step in Musk's ongoing efforts to transform the social media giant into a multifaceted platform.
